The post AGi32 Extension: What it is and how to use it appeared first on SketchUpFamily.

]]>
The developers at the Lighting Analysts group have published a very useful extension for SketchUp, called the Export to AGi32 extension. It will enable the user to export a SketchUp model to an intermediate file format LaiDex. That is an abbreviation of “Lighting Analysts Data Exchange” and they can be imported into your AGi32 files.

Using your SketchUp models in the AGi32 can be an enriching, rewarding experience. It provides great natural renders of for many objects from furniture, appliances, cars and machines to even whole buildings.

While you can use the AGi32 for your basic lighting models, the above data exchange functionality lets you use thousands of other models made with SketchUp (and are publicly available) at the 3D warehouse. Since that place contains every type of objects you need, and every other type of objects you don’t need, and some others even that you can’t ever need, using this extension you have pretty much a limitless lighting models to play with.

Compatibility

The Export to AGi32 extension for SketchUp is compatible to AGi32 versions 15.3 or higher, and it works in windows only. You need SketchUp 2020 Pro or Make versions to make it work. Please note that this extension will export your model colors, but unfortunately so far it does not support textures.

How does it work

When you use the Export to AGi32 extension in SketchUp, it creates an intermediary file called an LaiDex file, which stands for LAI Data Exchange. You can use that file directly in the AGi32 interface. You can do this by either using the import option, or simply by drag-and-dropping the file into the interface.

It is expected that high-poly models will cause problems with this sort of data exchange system, and you are right to assume so. However, most SketchUp native models are quite low-poly, and most of the popular models available at the SketchUp 3D Warehouse are well-optimized with the number of polygons. So, you shouldn’t be having much problem with the AGi32 extension.

However, a word to the wise here. Some SketchUp models can become quite high poly, nevertheless. Model complexity increases as you import-expect stuff a lot before using the extension. This is especially true if you’ve imported a 3D DWG file into SketchUp and built your model on that. The DWG import to SketchUp is always complicated and you should be doing a lot of cleanups after the import, or else you end up with a mess. Using the AGi32 extension on such an unclean model will surely affect your sanity.

How to install the AGi32 Extension

Installing the AGi32 plugin to your existing SketchUp software in windows is fairly easy and straightforward. Just follow the steps given below and you’ll get it.

  1. Download the export to AGi32 extension from the official sources. Note down where have you saved it. Generally, it should be in your “Downloads” folder.
  2. Open your SketchUp application now in windows only. It has to be a Make or Pro version of the 2020 or later edition.
  3. Go to the “Window” menu and select “Extension Manager“.
  4. The extensions window will appear, displaying a list of the SketchUp plugins you already have, and letting you add, remove or modify extension.
  5. Find the “Install Extension” button (the big red one at the bottom) and click on it.
  6. A dialog box opens showing your computer storage.
  7. In that box, navigate to the place where you’ve downloaded the AGi32 extension. As mentioned above, it could be the Downloads folder in your Documents.
  8. Find a file named “ExportToAGi32-1.1_Setup.rbz” in that folder among other files. Select only that file and click on the “Ok” button.
  9. At this point, SketchUp may throw a message box on screen asking if you really want to install this extension and warning you about installing from trusted sources.
  10. If you see this box, just click “Yes” and it will get installed automatically. If you don’t see any message box, then the installation should start without any intervention.

After a little while, the Export to AGi32 Extension for SketchUp should be installed. That’s it, you’re done! You can now take your (and other) models to AGi32 for lighting analysis.

One of the best things about Trimble SketchUp is that it can extend its abilities by adding plugins or extensions to it. Today, we will talk about Solid Inspector 2, one such extension that helps in preparing your 3D model for 3D printing and other volumetric operations.

SketchUp Extension Review : Solid Inspector 2

Solid Inspector 2

Solid Inspector 2 for SketchUp 2014 or later is a plugin or extension that you can use with a registered SketchUp Pro software. It finds and highlights the issues that are preventing your model from being a complete solid.

There are three main kinds of discrepancies that Solid Inspector 2 can detect in a given object: Model not solid, Useless face in model, Inverted face, Hidden lines.

The SI2 will highlight errors in a model and jump from one error to the next, repairing as you go. This gives the extension tremendous usability in confirming and repairing a model’s solid shell. For anyone making solid models or 3D printing, this is an indispensable plugin.

SketchUp Extension Review : Solid Inspector 2

Technical Details

The Solid Inspector 2 (SI2) extension can be found in the Extension Warehouse. The plugin is so popular, that chances are you will see it in the very first screen in the featured or most popular sections; if not, here is the link for the plugin page. The extension is also available in the GitHub repository, you can find it here.

Being an open-source development, you can download and use it for free. The RBZ is fairly small and installs fast. You would have to have Trimble SketchUp 2014 or newer in order to use the plugin. If you are using an older version of SketchUp, you can consider downloading the first version of the tool instead.

Presently the extension comes updated to version 2.4.7, which was released way back in December 2014. It is compatible with both Windows and Mac OS versions of SketchUp, and you can have it in English only.

How to use SI2?

Using the SI2 extension is fairly easy. Just select a group or an object and use any of the above three methods to invoke the plugin. You also have a keyboard shortcut “I” by which you can start using it. A small window will pop up with the list of errors in your model.

In order to check if the model is watertight or not and to ensure that the model can be properly interpreted with a slicer software and 3D printers, SI2 tries to find if your model has any holes in it, if there are any inverted faces, if there are hidden lines in the model, and if there are any useless faces.

In the popup window, you can see the errors concerning the solidity of the object currently selected. You can select each error and fix them, or you can alternatively click “Fix All” at the bottom right corner to correct all the solid shell discrepancies entirely. However, it is not recommended in case of complicated large models since in that case, you should carefully evaluate the impact of each correction on the model.

Note that to use the Solid Inspector 2 plugin properly, you will need to group the faces and vertices into one object first; otherwise, you may get erroneous results.

SketchUp Extension Review : Solid Inspector 2

When invoked, other than the dialog box, the extension will mark your hitherto-unsolid model with red and yellow markers. Red lines mean critical errors that are making the model not watertight, and yellow markers are denoting the “dirtiness” of it. Internal edges and faces will be marked with yellow and holes and inverted faces will go red-marked. With errors appearing on your model, you should use the extension in the x-ray view mode to be able to look inside the model. You can also use the hidden geometry option to view the discrepancies and get an idea of the overall cleanliness of your model.

After all the errors and garbage has been cleaned out of your model, you will get a cheerful smiley message in the SI2 window saying all is cool. You can also select the object and see that it’s saying it is a Solid Group. Don’t panic and remember where your towel is!

There are plenty of benefits to three-dimensional modeling software today. From a simple tool used by architects to a full-blown visualization program, SketchUp has continuously evolved over the past decade.

Despite its challenging journey, it has grown into a modeler that is capable of integrating with many plugins and rendering software applications that rank among the most robust.

SketchUp is an excellent tool for computer savvy rendering artists of any skill level. This product has a user-friendly interface that allows beginners as well as professionals to easily learn it. You can take full advantage of the auxiliary plugins available within SketchUp once you become familiar with the program.

SketchUp Users favorite extensions

The following are some of the best Sketchup plugins that every user must utilize in 2023:-

Purge All Tool

Maintaining a clean and organized model can be time-consuming and frustrating in SketchUp.

It is not just good practice, but also imperative, as if your model gets too big, you risk spreading layers and model components throughout the whole thing.

Despite its seemingly simple name, Purge All is a very important plugin with a very clear purpose. In addition, this plugin will allow you to perform a more precise and robust purge than SketchUp’s default tools, and you will even be able to see what has been affected after the purge has taken place.

CurviLoft tool

If you are interested in creating curvilinear models of your own, CurviLoft will be the ideal tool for you. It will bring to you things that you would have thought would only be possible if you had a program like Maya or Rhino at your disposal. You can use three tools with Curviloft: lofting along a path, lofting along a line or skinning along a line.

In some practical aspects, CurviLoft and Follow Me have some similarities in terms of how they work and how they function. Compared to CurviLoft, however, CurviLoft is not only capable of connecting two shapes along a path, but it can also connect two different shapes at the same time when they are connected along the same path.

Joint Push Pull plugins

Joint Push Pull offers you a number of tools that you can use to make your model look like the digital Gumby. In addition to going into the technical details of what each of these tools does, be assured that mastering this plugin will save you a great deal of time when you are modeling.

Thea rendering tool

When used in conjunction with SketchUp’s material design, it is a great rendering plugin for its effects and material design features.

The renderer’s fog and cloud preset that are included with the renderer can be used to render an interactive render using Interactive Region Rendering in Sketchup.

Using Sketchup, designers can select specific parts of their designs to render, and Sketchup will respond with the results automatically.

Thea offers a wide range of material types in addition to a broad material library. Whether you are creating layers, tone mappings, displacements, or procedural textures. In SketchUp, you can access these libraries either through the paint bucket tool or through the content browser.

Twilight Rendering Extension

Twilight Render still has a long way to go before it reaches its full potential. It is worth noting that this is the only free rendering plugin that we know of, and it will give you a decent output image as well as a decent library of materials. However, we would like to emphasize that this is not intended for professional users.

Furthermore, it allows Sketchup users to experiment with a rendering tool for free, giving them the opportunity to become familiar with it completely through experimentation. This aspect also resembles SketchUp itself.

Brighter 3D software

The tool features an easy to use interface, a streamlined toolset, and a lot of power under the hood when it comes to visual effects rendering, so it advertises an easy-to-use tool that also has a lot of power under the hood.

With Brighter, you can create an accurate and comparable digital sample image in seconds using an intuitive preview tool that seamlessly integrates with SketchUp.

VRAY plugins

In addition to SketchUp, VRAY supports the application with its own user friendly plugin. If you are interested in making photo realistic renderings using SketchUp, you probably want to start by looking into VRAY as a starting point.

It has a material editor, as well as all the other tools included in the package, which will enable you to create pro quality images and animations with ease.

In VRAY, you are given access to a free set of tools and materials, but you also have the option of putting a little skin in the game to enable you to make full use of the full range of options and settings that are available to you.

JHS Power Bar

This plugin offers a number of useful functions, including the ability to create arrays based on paths. Balustrades can be created quickly using a series of components arranged according to a predefined pattern.

Section Cut Face

This plugin allows you to easily add faces to your section planes. It is also possible to set the face to update automatically as you edit the model, allowing you to quickly change the color for presentation purposes.

IRender nXt is certainly going to improve the appearance of your SketchUp models in client presentations, and there can be no doubt about that.

The IRender nXt software allows you to create high-quality architectural renderings directly from SketchUp models. You can use these renderings to enhance your client presentations and proposals to demonstrate your professionalism by putting a professional touch on them.

IRender nXt Version 7.0

IRender nXt 7.0 from Render Plus systems offers new features for Trimble SketchUp.

IRender nXt is a strong plugin that functions flawlessly inside SketchUp for rendering high-resolution photos. IRender nXt is without a doubt completely connected with Sketch Up’s materials, lighting, and components, enabling you to build interior and outdoor scenarios that may be either daylight or nighttime depending on the lighting.

Designers can easily create render-ready SketchUp models using IRender nXt 7.0 by incorporating light sources, reflective properties, transparency, refraction, and a variety of other rendering functions. This software also allows designers to quickly refine rendering settings.

Version 7.0 includes a number of enhancements that emphasize more user-friendly controls for rendering parameters that enhance the rendering workflow. You will be able to create excellent renderings faster than ever thanks to the introduction of IRender nXt 7.0.

Latest Features

Various effects of lighting

With the new Preset Light Profiles available in SketchUp or you can search the Internet for IES files produced by manufacturers, you are able to achieve more realistic lighting with the help of the Preset Light Profiles available in SketchUp.

To achieve this, select the lighting profile that corresponds to the fixture you are adding to your SketchUp model, as well as the lighting profile that was created by the manufacturer.

Styles that differ and are unique

Material Styles, whether used in new construction, renovations, or remodeling projects, make it extremely easy to study and present design alternatives to clients, and make it much more enjoyable for them to explore.

This feature allows architects and interior designers to evaluate design decisions in more detail when using SketchUp models along with these tools, as a result of being able to use SketchUp models with these tools to evaluate design decisions in more detail.

Enhanced Reflexion quality

With the new version 7.0 of IRender nXt, there is a new Auto Reflection feature has been added. The intensity and sharpness of reflections can be adjusted by choosing a word match between the material names and the word in the material name.

In the material properties list, for example, you can set the reflective property for all materials that contain the word metal.

Rendering of 2D Plants JPG is now possible

The new feature added to TreeMaker 7 makes it possible to render all or some of the plants as simple 2D images, thereby allowing users to view them in a more realistic way.

A new button has been added to the Setup Options – Plants tab that allows you to choose the format of the plants, depending on whether they are to be displayed in 2D or 3D depending on the preference of the developer. Each individual plant can be edited by right-clicking it and choosing Edit Plant.

A fractal plant being rendered in SketchUp can take considerably longer to render than rendering a 2D image in SketchUp, due to the fact that fractal plants are not symmetrical.

HDR rendering

The HDRi Sky preset loads Bear Mountain, an HDRi sky, and alters other settings to make the sky visible.

HDRi Skies may have been used in the past for lighting, but the new Lighting Preset makes setting one up quick and easy with just one click. After selecting this preset, you can quickly select a different sky by using the HDRi tab.

Additional Features

  • A checkbox to specify Low Priority for the rendering process has been added to the More options tab.
  • The Lighting Channels dialogue, as seen from the Render Window, may now utilize the same Average Luminance as Animations.
  • The option to store Background pictures in the SketchUp model was included for portability. You may activate this option on the Background or Options tab.
  • The checkbox on Lighting Channels may now be used to quickly turn them on and off without erasing the slider settings.
  • Automatic Luminance has been locked to enable lighting channel adjustments without automatically altering scene brightness.
  • Automatic Luminance has been locked to prevent automatic brightness adjustments when lighting channels are changed.
